Arizona jury indicts Trump allies in 'fake elector' scheme Here & Now

white house chief of staff

The staff of the various offices are based in the West Wing and East Wing of the White House, the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, and the New Executive Office Building. Senior staff, with high level, close contact with the President, have the title Assistant to the President. Second-level staff have the title Deputy Assistant to the President, and third-level staff have the title Special Assistant to the President.[2] These aides oversee the political and policy interests of the president. The president said the White House will host an official transition event next week to thank Klain and to welcome Zients back to the White House as chief of staff. President Biden formally announced Friday that Jeff Zients, the former White House COVID-19 czar, will replace Ron Klain as chief of staff.

The news cycle is 24/7, and there are more platforms than ever. I do think it makes it more challenging for the president to govern and the chief of staff to execute policy, but it makes it all the more important that you have a chief of staff who understands the nexus between policy and communications. You have to be able to manage the administration’s message and make sure everyone is on the same page. Those orders were more than an annoyed attempt to keep the president’s schedule clear. Haldeman may not have known it, but as head S.O.B. he would make history, essentially creating the modern chief of staff. Part gatekeeper, part taskmaster, a chief of staff is the White House’s most put-upon power broker—an employer who must juggle the demands of all branches of government and report to the chief executive.

Obama administration 2008–2015

Almost all of the White House Office staff are political appointees of the president, do not require Senate confirmation and can be dismissed at the discretion of the president. Klain has served in the top role for more than two years and was a key adviser to Biden during the 2020 campaign. It has been long expected that he would leave sometime after the midterm elections, and the plan is for him to do so after Biden's State of the Union address early next month, said the sources who spoke on condition of anonymity. In private conversations dating back to the middle of last year, Klain made it known that the job was exhausting, and he talked about departing around the midpoint of Biden's term, one person familiar with his views said.

Advisory board and corporate executive board

He is the president's closest adviser and the person he depends on to execute his agenda. He decides who gets to see the president, negotiates with Congress, and receives unparalleled access. Each chief can make or break an administration, and each president reveals himself by the chief he picks. Zients' first government job was in 2009, when he was made chief performance officer for the Office of Management and Budget for the Obama administration. He went on to serve as the director of the National Economic Council and assistant to Obama for economic policy. Mr. Biden has described Zients as an "expert manager," which is why the president brought him on to handle the administration's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ron Klain Expected to Step Down as Biden’s White House Chief of Staff

He’s not only the president’s closest confidant, but the president’s gatekeeper. He’s the honest broker who makes sure every decision is teed up with information and only the tough decisions get into the oval office. He’s what Donald Rumsfeld called “the heat shield,” the person who takes fire so the president doesn’t have to. He is who tells the president what people can’t afford to tell the president themselves.

In the article, the Journal questioned Pecker's relationship with Donald Trump at the time, Pecker says, adding it was published just days before the 2016 election. Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., would not confirm or deny Klain's reported plans to depart. But he said that Klain has been an indispensable part of the policy successes Biden has racked up. Klain's exit comes at a critical time for the White House and presents Biden with one of his most difficult personnel challenges to date.

The following table details previous White House chiefs of staff since the role was created in 1946. We'll be in touch with the latest information on how President Biden and his administration are working for the American people, as well as ways you can get involved and help our country build back better. Skinner served as executive producer on several shows that place emphasis on female professionals in the sports industry, particularly the NFL. While Donald Trump sits in a Manhattan courtroom in his criminal hush money trial, a federal judge upheld E. Jean Carroll's defamation verdict and denied the former president's motion for a new trial Thursday.

“We have no announcement right now,” he told NBC News Saturday afternoon. Mr. Klain, a lawyer and veteran Democratic operative who first worked for the president-elect in the late 1980s when he was a senator, has been a sharp critic of President Trump’s handling of the coronavirus. "Ron has been invaluable to me over the many years that we have worked together, including as we rescued the American economy from one of the worst downturns in our history in 2009 and later overcame a daunting public health emergency in 2014," Biden said in a statement. Maybe not under this administration, but there almost was under Obama. To learn more about how the position came into existence, how it has changed over time, and what it means for the country today, Smithsonian.com spoke with Whipple about his research.

He does have more business experience than Klain, something that could benefit the president as he heads into the second half of his term. As the first departure among a stable core of senior advisers closest to the president, Klain’s exit is likely the first domino in a series of staffing moves to come. Advisers have long said a wave of them would likely come after the State of the Union on Feb. 7, with parallel moves as part of a campaign ramp-up. “His deep, varied experience and capacity to work with people all across the political spectrum is precisely what I need in a White House chief of staff as we confront this moment of crisis and bring our country together again,” Mr. Biden said. An alumnus of the Obama-Biden administration, Klain had previously been Biden's chief of staff when he was vice president.

But when filled by competent people, it can make all the difference.

The next White House chief will need to fend off aggressive investigations coming from the Republican House majority while ensuring Biden remains a viable candidate for re-election. In a statement, Mr. Biden called Mr. Klain an “invaluable” adviser, noting in particular the work they did together during the economic crisis in 2009 and the Ebola outbreak in 2014. An earlier headline mistakenly said Ron Klain would be White House chief of staff in 2020. "He knows Ron and Ron knows him," said Rahm Emanuel, a former chief of staff to former President Barack Obama. "That trust level is essential. When Ron Klain goes up to [Capitol] Hill, everybody knows he's speaking for Joe Biden."

Others, he said, were James Baker, who was chief of staff under Republican presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush; and Leon Panetta, who held the post under Democratic President Bill Clinton, Whipple said. Klain, as a senior adviser to the Biden campaign, was particularly instrumental in its coronavirus messaging. He recorded an explanatory video in front of a white board that ended up being one of the campaign's most popular videos on social media platforms as it transitioned to a mostly digital operation during the early days of the pandemic. "His deep, varied experience and capacity to work with people all across the political spectrum is precisely what I need in a White House chief of staff as we confront this moment of crisis and bring our country together again," Biden added in the statement. This whole journey began with a phone call out of the blue with a filmmaker named Jules Naudet.

Klain, who was also Biden's chief of staff during his vice presidency, is credited with bringing a quiet discipline and order to West Wing operations, which have been noticeably free of drama. WASHINGTON — Ron Klain, the White House chief of staff who has steered President Biden’s administration through two years of triumphs and setbacks, is expected to step down in coming weeks in the most significant changing of the guard since Mr. Biden took office two years ago. When Emanuel was Obama's chief of staff, the administration had to deal with the financial crisis and the auto bailout.

Back in December, ten [former chiefs of staff] went to see Reince Priebus at the invitation of Denis McDonough [Obama’s last chief of staff] to give him advice, much the way they did for Rahm back in 2008. But [the success of the chief of staff] really all depends on the president at the end of the day. There’s almost nothing a chief of staff can do unless he’s empowered to do it.

A video of Mr. Klain lecturing Mr. Trump about the pandemic was widely seen during the campaign. WILMINGTON, Del. — President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. named Ron Klain, a veteran Democratic operative and a decades-long confidant, to be his White House chief of staff Wednesday evening, the first step toward putting in place his administration’s senior leadership. At the end of the day, the problem, the challenge is fundamentally Donald Trump’s. If he heeds the obvious lessons of recent presidential history he will realize that he has to empower a White House chief of staff as first among equals if he wants to be able to govern.

[He and his brother] wanted to know if I would partner with them on a White House chiefs documentary for Discovery. Even though it was four hours, I thought it barely scratched the surface of this incredible untold story about the men who really made the difference between success and disaster. After the documentary aired, I started to dig much deeper, went back for follow up interviews, talked to the chiefs’ colleagues, their staffers, two presidents and CIA directors, national security advisors. Unelected and unconfirmed, the White House chief of staff serves at the whim of the president, hired and fired by him alone.

Curtis Raymond Ried, a Career Member of the Foreign Service, currently serves as Deputy Assistant to the President and Chief of Staff and Executive Secretary of the White House National Security Council (NSC). Ried was most recently assigned overseas as Deputy Political Counselor at the U.S. Previously, Ried served on the NSC as Senior Advisor to the National Security Advisor, and prior to that, as the NSC’s Director for United Nations Affairs.

You can’t imagine the demands of the office and how impossible it is to try and govern without an effective gatekeeper, who makes sure you get only the toughest decisions and are not drowning in minutiae. That’s the difference between governing in the modern era and governing in the 19th century. When it comes to the White House, the team of rivals [model] is so 19th-century; it doesn’t work in the modern era. Gerald Ford tried to govern according to a model called “spokes of the wheel,” with five or six advisors of equal authority coming to him. The role is an enormously taxing one, with an average tenure of just over 18 months.

A president’s first chief of staff typically stays in the job for about two years. Trump replaced his first chief of staff, Reince Priebus, early, just six months after he took office. Former President Barack Obama’s first chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, left after the midterm elections. Whipple, who also wrote a book on White House chiefs of staff, rated Klain as one of the best in the modern presidency.

Office of Public Engagement

The next chief of staff will be charged with managing the defense of Mr. Biden’s White House and any counterattack as the 2024 election approaches. But with Mr. Biden expected to announce by spring that he is running for re-election, advisers predict more moves as some aides shift from the White House to the campaign. The chief of staff is a political appointee of the president of the United States who does not require Senate confirmation, and who serves at the pleasure of the President. While not a legally required role, all presidents since Harry S. Truman have appointed a chief of staff. He is taking over as the White House faces an assortment of political headwinds, including looming congressional investigations from House Republicans and a special counsel investigation surrounding Mr. Biden’s possession of classified documents. Chuck Schumer, the Senate majority leader and Democrat of New York, said in an interview that the White House chief of staff “inevitably” has to understand the politics behind every decision made.

Upon retiring from broadcast journalism in 2010, Skinner transitioned her work on screen to behind the camera. She produced several NFL-related projects centered around female professionals working for the league. The pair met through mutual friends, though lived in different states at the time. Goodell was already working for the NFL in New York, while an ambitious, career-minded Skinner was on track to achieving her "dream job" in Chicago. They hired a a press consultant for McDougal who reported to Pecker, the former tabloid executive testified.

But now, he says, the country is dealing with multiple simultaneous crises. In a statement, Klain described his appointment as White House chief of staff as "the honor of a lifetime." Reagan was famously called an amiable dunce, and that was unfair, but Reagan understood something [his predecessor] Carter did not. An outsider president needs a consummate insider to get things done.

In a lengthy statement, Mr. Biden praised Klain for his tireless work, and said he is "confident that Jeff will continue Ron's example of smart, steady leadership, as we continue to work hard every day for the people we were sent here to serve." “This is a huge challenge for Joe Biden to pick Ron Klain’s successor,” Whipple said. Klain belongs in elite company among the best White House chiefs of staff around. Klain declined to confirm or deny news of his impending departure, which was first reported by The New York Times.

Reagan intuited this with help from Nancy Reagan and other advisers. He knew he needed somebody who could really get his agenda done, who knew Capitol Hill and how the White House worked. And James Baker was a 50-year-old smooth-as-silk Texas lawyer who wasn’t afraid to walk into the Oval Office and tell Reagan what he didn’t want to hear. Pecker recalled visiting Trump Tower in early January 2017 and meeting former FBI Director James Comey, former White House press secretary Sean Spicer, former White House chief of staff Reince Priebus and former CIA Director Mike Pompeo. Easy Haunted House Drawing

All you will need is a pencil and a sheet of paper. You may also wish to use colored pencils, crayons, markers, or paints to color your finished drawing. Haunted houses are often portrayed in films and similar media. For example, the 2006 animated film Monster House features a haunted house that is itself a living creature. The idea of a haunted house likely originates from the widespread religious belief that a spirit leaves the body after death.

These houses are said to be inhabited by malicious spirits and ghosts of people who have passed. Simply trace over the pencil lines you want to keep with a black pen or marker. I’m using a PITT Artist Pen for my drawings today.

That way you could also draw a spooky front yard that could even have some gravestones in it!

Step 1

First, you can draw some small rectangle shapes throughout the house to make it look a bit more dilapidated. Then, draw two vertical lines that are very slightly diagonally leaning outward. Finally, use a line over the top of these lines for the top of the house.

It is not the fact that a famous horror icon loved to garden, which makes this garden a place of paranormal activity. What makes it haunted is that many of his friends asked if Karloff would scatter their remains on his roses after they died. Hearing unusual sounds, seeing ghostly figures and the feeling of not being alone is all rather common for visitors to the hotel. If you are looking for a restful night’s sleep, it is not the best place to stay.

People visiting the home have made claims of being pushed or pulled by the angry ghosts. The most intense activity occurs at night, when even if the T.V. Channels are changed, the visitor may experience activity from the angry, revenge-seeking ghosts. Although no living person may be in the room playing the trumpet, some believe it is the ghost of Montgomery Clift, who spent some time in the hotel while filming a movie.

More From the Los Angeles Times

Then, you can draw another window inside the section you drew into the roof in the previous step. Finally, you can draw a square with a triangle on top of it inside the roof outline. This top line should extend a little bit past the vertical lines, as seen in our reference image.

Next you’ll want to draw the roof for that section. Notice how the bottom edge of the roof is wider than the rectangle shape. And that it gets more narrow at the top of the roof. In 1971, the home plus the entire block on Carroll, were declared cultural historical monuments. The houses still stand today, and a plaque remains at the end of the block celebrating the accomplishment.

Another Haunted House Drawing Project

Learn how to draw a great looking Haunted House with easy, step-by-step drawing instructions, and video tutorial. Now that you’ve learned how to draw a haunted house, what should you do next? When drawing the different parts of your haunted house you can make things a bit crooked. It will help your house look older and a bit more haunted.

Some might not be so psyched about it, but this house will always have a special place in my heart. Like most spawn from the 80s, The Making of Michael Jackson's Thriller was a permanent fixture in the VHS player during my childhood. Great to see this house still alive and kicking it. Razing the Zimmerman House is not just “so brutal,” but wasteful in a variety of ways, Ellwood added.

I used grays, browns, and blue for my artwork today. You can make the areas under the roofs darker to show the shadow from the overhang. And add some darker areas in the windows between the boards. Learning how to draw a haunted house with markers is easier than what you might think. And there’s only a few things you need to keep in mind. Adding some blemishes to your haunted house will give it more character and make it look more interesting.

Give yourself a week to do 7 drawings and see what you come up with. There are many different ways to draw your windows. It has a kind of Victorian look to it, which can bring another kind of vibe to your haunted house drawing projects. When you make your own haunted house sketch, you could also add even more details to make it even creepier. Perhaps some gravestones in the garden would give it a bit more scariness. You could even add more elements like some ghosts and werewolves to the image for some extra scary fun.

As you can see in our reference image, we used some more muted purples, greys and blues to color our picture in. Using fine-tip pens or markers, carefully trace over the pencil lines. Start with the main outline, and then move on to the details. Be patient and take your time to ensure smooth and clean lines. You can also add thicker lines to emphasize certain areas or create shading effects.

You could do this by drawing the house on some hard cardboard and then folding it over. For this first step of our guide on how to draw a haunted house, you will need a ruler along with your favorite drawing tool. Now it’s time to add some texture to the haunted house walls. Use short, diagonal lines to create the appearance of weathered wood or cracked brickwork. Vary the direction and length of the lines to make the walls look more worn and menacing. Using the house’s rectangular shape as a guide, draw in the windows and doors.

With the details in place, go over the main outline of the haunted house with bolder and firmer lines. Clean up any stray pencil marks, and make sure the edges are defined and sharp. This step will give your drawing a more polished and finished look. A haunted house is generally seen as a piece of property or a home where something unpleasant may have happened in the past.

Haunted houses have been a prevalent belief around the world. Towns and cities usually have at least one place they consider haunted. The other-worldly phenomena that happen inside these homes are usually debunked by science. Despite this, it has always been a thrill that we as humans seek to get our blood pumping and our hearts racing. Use a series of short, curved, connected lines to outline the bottom of the hill, enclosing its shape.

There is an overall feeling of horror, sadness, and despair in the hotel. Although the hotel was a place of luxury, tremendous violence and tragedies occurred in the areas surrounding it. Many ghosts were killed in the Chinese massacre of 1871, and other people killed by other violent offenses continue to haunt the area. In scary settings, you will often see layers of clouds obscuring the moon. You could also make the moon look larger and more imposing for another idea.

Then, draw two more straight lines going diagonally inwards on top of that rectangle. You can then draw a short horizontal line connecting these two. There’s something about spooky things and the paranormal that is fascinating to many people.

On the top of the triangular roof, sketch some uneven and jagged lines to give the haunted house an aged and weathered look. Commune design is, therefore, not just a response to the challenges of our time, but also a seed of hope for a more connected, creative, and equitable future. Northern California’s fertile design heritage and progressive cultural climate have been a lodestar for Commune since the inception of the practice, and many of the firm’s most trusted collaborators and craftspeople hail from the region. Their collective talents are on full, vibrant display throughout the home. Oakland-based Theodore Ellison created the vivid glass rondels that adorn the front door and bath screen, as well as the glass mosaic tiles that clad the fireplace. The dining table was lovingly crafted by Tripp Carpenter, son of the great furniture maker and Bolinas pillar Arthur Espenet Carpenter. There are fields of Heath Ceramics tile, JB Blunk sculptures, an Ido Yoshimoto cocktail table, and redwood lounge chairs by Jesse Schlesinger.

Examples of Communal Living Spaces

The primary bath is outfitted with a John Wigmore light box, wallpaper by Marthe Armitage, Heath Ceramics tile, and a glass screen by Theodore Ellison Designs. The primary bedroom has a Tomlinson Woodworks walnut side table, curtains and table lampshade by Josef Frank for Svenskt Tenn, a Swedish flat-weave rug by Doris Leslie Blau, and a bedcover by Adam Pogue. Artworks by Lena Wolff (above bed) and Ruth Charlotte Kneass (mobile). In Roman’s Los Angeles kitchen, the cabinets are replicas of the originals from 1966 and painted in the colors Manhattan Bridge and Home by Drikolor. The large print is by Sister Corita, and the vintage Fillmore posters are from a collection that was started back in New York in the 1990s.

The ReGen Village also promotes community involvement and social cohesion by providing shared spaces for recreation, learning, and cultural activities. His cowboy motifs influenced numerous details throughout the house, from the family room’s hand-stenciled cabinetry and ceiling beams to the whipstitching on the sconce shades and the moccasin-like embroidery on a pair of armchairs. The master bed has a headboard in a Clarence House mohair and is topped with pillows in fabrics from Schumacher and Pierre Frey.

Communal living emphasized cooperation, creativity, and collaboration. But as the decades passed, communes became less popular, and many of them dissolved due to internal conflicts or external pressures. However, the ethos of communal living never disappeared entirely, and today we witness a resurgence of interest in collaborative living spaces. The California look is a design style that is characterized by a mix of rustic and modern elements, natural materials, warm colors, and light-filled spaces that create a relaxed, indoor-outdoor feel.

The family room’s sofa in an Edelman leather and armchairs in a Kravet stripe are by Ralph Lauren Home. Rudin, the custom walnut cocktail table is by Commune Design, the sconces are by Paul Ferrante, the custom rug is by Amadi Carpets, and the Roman shades on the original leaded windows are in a Colefax and Fowler fabric. The Thomas C. Molesworth–inspired motifs on the ceiling beams and custom cabinetry were painted by artist Nic Valle, the ceiling is sheathed in a Ralph Lauren Home grass cloth, and the cowboy ink drawings are by Edward Borein. Some key elements of Commune Design's approach to the California look include using natural and sustainable materials, creating a connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, and incorporating vintage and handmade pieces for a personal touch.

The sharing of resources, such as common spaces, tools, and food, can also reduce the environmental impact of individual consumption, and promote sustainability. Furthermore, living in a community can foster creativity, collaboration, and learning, as people from diverse backgrounds and skillsets come together and share their knowledge and experiences. Finally, communal living can offer economic advantages, such as lower rent, shared utilities, and affordable healthcare.

At its heart, this project is a love letter to Northern California’s West Marin region—a paean to the area’s history, landscape, craft traditions, and bohemian soul. Alex Riley, a prominent local designer and poet of organic architecture, built the original 1,000-square-foot house for himself in the 1960s. When the property changed hands in the late 1980s, Riley added a primary suite and a compact guest cottage for the new owners, evolving his signature design language of clerestories and trusses.

Crafted in earthy hues of moss, mauve, copper, and chocolate brown, the floor covering range includes the fringed Wilcox and Harper, characterized by its subtly raised and two-toned grid pattern. Colonial Williamsburg, in Virginia, transports visitors back to 18th-century America, and the living history museum’s Williamsburg branded products serve as an extended history lesson. Schumacher & Co. produced Williamsburg licensed fabrics, and a dozen years later the design house is back at it with Homecoming, an expansive assemblage of fabrics, wallcoverings, trims, and pillows that pay homage to the past. The updated florals, stripes, checks, and scallops include the pineapple-emblazoned Lafayette Botanical, derived from an 18th-century French chintz, as well as the Dandridge Damask, developed from the fragment of a gown once worn by Martha Washington.

Another seasonal seafood San Francisco dish you may plan your trip around is the King Salmon season. The salmon season is open from April through May and again from late June through October. There is something about being on the water that immediately makes you salivate for fresh seafood. Many of these San Francisco Wharf restaurants take their boats out and fish right there in local waters and serve fresh local seafood to guests every day.

The meat from these local crustaceans is a bit sweet, delicate, and tender compared to other crabs you may be accustomed to. For instance, if you are used to King crab you will be surprised that Dungeness crab legs are much smaller yet still offer succulent delicious bites of crab meat. Dungeness crab season is typically November through March when San Francisco crab restaurants can catch and serve fresh, local, 2-pound and larger Dungeness crabs right from the local waters. Do note that this season moves around a bit due to algae spikes and whale patterns so as not to harm whales in the crab nets. This fun and casual eatery has everything you could want in a seafood restaurant and is a must if you are looking for crab in San Francisco.

Best Crab Restaurant on Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf

A state Department of Natural Resources report published in January 2023 found that in the 1990s, crabbers caught about 6 million blue crabs annually. That number fell to about 3 million in recent years, and 2023 recorded the lowest catch in 50 years, the report found. South Carolina state Sen. Chip Campsen, R-Isle of Palms, asks questions during a Senate debate in January 2024. Campsen championed a bill that would have introduced regulations on the state’s blue crab fishery. There is a lot of competition for crab in San Francisco since the city is famous for the ever-desirable Dungeness crab local to the area. If you were to search for a restaurant Fisherman’s Wharf San Francisco you would be overwhelmed with the type of restaurant near PIER 39 that comes up claiming to serve the best crab in San Francisco.

The dining room is spacious and can accommodate large groups, making Crab House the perfect venue for a special occasion or a night out with friends. But for those who prefer a more relaxed and intimate setting, the restaurant also has an outdoor patio where diners can enjoy their meal while taking in the fresh sea air. Whether you’re there for lunch or dinner, Crab House is easily one of the best restaurants PIER 39 has to offer if you are looking to enjoy the scenery. In addition to its focus on flavor, Crab House is also committed to sustainability. It is one of the Fisherman’s Wharf restaurants that sources only the freshest and highest-quality seafood, ensuring that its seafood is responsibly sourced and in line with sustainable fishing practices. This commitment to sustainability sets Crab House apart from other San Francisco Wharf restaurant practices and is just one of the many reasons why it’s a must-visit destination for seafood lovers.

The bill, championed by state Sen. Chip Campsen, R-Isle of Palms, underwent significant changes after four public hearings in which crabbers and the state Department of Natural Resources ultimately could not see eye to eye. Skyline that unfold from the balcony of his 1,100-square-foot, two-bedroom home. Communes should allow for flexibility in the use of space, as the needs of the community may change over time. Furniture, partitions, and storage should be easily moveable, and common areas should be able to accommodate a range of activities, from socializing to working, cooking, and hosting events. But we also decided to incorporate the theme in more subtle ways, to remind you of the care that goes into everything Breadblok does without having to scream it out loud. You could miss it if you don’t pause and catch the right light, but it’s always there. Remodeling and renovation tips and ideas for projects big and small.

Born in Caracas, Venezuela Roman’s family emigrated to Miami where he attended high school. He later attended Boston University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in film and art history. Following his studies, he worked in publishing at Connoisseur and Mirabella Magazine and subsequently went on to work at Barneys New York as Director of Corporate PR and Isaac Mizrahi & Co. where he was Vice President and Image Director. This latest collaboration between the pair (Roberts designed Radnor’s Upper East Side apartment showroom and launched the Triad furniture line with the label in 2021) features GoodWeave-certified rugs that are hand-corded, hand-spun, and hand-knotted in Nepal. Crafted from 100% mohair and adorned with jute fringe, each rug has a carefully chosen pile height to elicit a discerning iridescence. A warm modernist palette of plaster, brick, oak, pine, ore, and indigo—chosen to reflect the various floor types that Roberts envisions layering the rugs over. The world of Johanknecht strikes many of the same notes found in the home of his confrere—a color-saturated bedroom; a generous built-in daybed surrounded by books; and examples of work by Allen, Silverman, Pogue, and other frequent Commune collaborators. The massive gilt-framed painting of a shipwreck on Long Island that commands the living room was a gift from Johanknecht’s grandmother. “The painting throws everything off a little, which I like,” the designer says.

In the living room, their two young children do their homework and play. “Viennese design and Brazilian furniture were an influence — and we wanted to honor the craftsman style but also to be unexpected,” says the design duo. Has emerged as a genuine hub of global culture, beckoning wave upon wave of fresh transplants from around the world.

Johanknecht makes a similar case for the benefits of apartment life. “I lived in a cozy Tudor cottage for a dozen years, but I wanted a different experience. I like the efficiency of an apartment, and I like being up high—it gives you a different relationship to the landscape,” he explains, describing the panoramic vistas of the San Gabriel Mountains and the downtown L.A.

Communes can take various forms, from intentional communities to co-living spaces, co-housing communities, eco-villages, and more. What unites them is the focus on communal living and the desire to build meaningful relationships with others. The practice of alternative bread and pastry baking is thriving in California. Responding to the trend, Breadblok, the gluten-free bakery established by Chloé Charlier, recently opened a new brick-and-mortar outpost in Santa Monica.

The Roam provides a membership-based living experience that allows members to roam from one location to another while still having a sense of community. The Roam's communal spaces are designed to meet the needs of digital nomads and entrepreneurs who value flexibility, community, and access to resources. The custom dining table is by Shop Now, the Dessin Fournir chairs are in a Myung Jin mohair, and the 19th-century chandelier is original.

“This place is my California spin on a modernist apartment, Bauhaus meets midcentury, all bathed in the light and colors of the L.A. I wanted the apartment to feel considered but not fussy or overly designed,” he adds. The resurgence of interest in communal living spaces reflects a broader shift in societal values towards collaboration, sustainability, and community engagement. As urbanization, environmental degradation, and economic inequality continue to shape our world, communal living may provide an alternative vision of how we can live and thrive together. Moreover, the design principles of communal living spaces can inform the design of other types of social spaces, such as schools, workplaces, and healthcare facilities, which can benefit from a more community-oriented, sustainable, and accessible approach.

Nature is a consistent muse in watercolor artist Kelly Ventura’s works, and her trio of fabric designs for custom window coverings maker Wovn Home further explores her connection to the great outdoors. The Michigan-based artist’s exclusive designs include Courtyard, a faint, painterly floral; Fern, a flora stripe capturing the poetic unfurling of fronds; and Trail, a ripple wave pattern as though freshly imprinted from a sandy shore. Defined by a ribbed diffuser and triangular forms, Stick’s wall-mounted and suspended iterations elicit a sophisticated cool thanks to their Art Deco–inspired frames (available in satin gold nickel or satin copper). The client of this home in Berkeley Hills, California, wanted a house that was beautiful but completely user-friendly.

The romance between shadow and light enchants in AD100 designer Kelly Behun’s two new hand painted wallpaper designs for Calico. As though capturing a still of an afternoon sun exuding through a slatted pergola, the Bask wallpaper enchants in a soft, minimalist palette.
